Daniel Roth was born in France in 1945 but was close to Geneva and has always admired watches. Abraham idolized Louis Breguet and promised to follow in the footsteps of the great watchmaker. This brought him to enroll at the Le Sentier School of Horology.
Roth honed his craft and knowledge by working for three leading Swiss watchmakers from 1972 to 1988. This included a time spent at Jaeger-LeCoultre and a focus on ultrafine movements during the years he spent developing his craft for Audemars Piguet, both at Le Sentier and at Chaumet at Le Brassus. He became the technical manager of Chaumet, which produces watches comparable to Breguet's products.
In 1988 Roth founded his own company in Le Sentier and launched the Daniel Roth brand the following year. Since the country is known to prefer complex watches in precious metal cases, it chose Italy as its first market. In 1991, Roth partnered with Siber Hegner to market its watches worldwide.
Daniel Roth watches were instantly recognizable by their characteristic case shapes. A unique combination of circle, square and oval. He specialized in tourbillon watches, retrograde hands, and other complications.
In 1994, Roth sold his company to Singapore-based trading house The Hour Glass, which already distributes most of its watches. However, Roth remained with the company and was responsible for many complications in the 1990s. In 2000, Italian luxury group Bulgari took over the brand, which merged with the Gerald Genta brand and now has a model line under LVMH under Bulgari.
After 2000, Daniel Roth continued to pursue his own watch projects apart from his brand. Roth produces several watches a year in his home for his private clients.
